Key Points

Definition of Discipleship

Definition

Explanation

Discipleship involves following Jesus Christ, learning from Him, and living out His teachings in every area of life. It is not merely about intellectual assent but a whole-life commitment to becoming like Christ.

Biblical Example

Jesus’ call to the first disciples (Matthew 4:18-22).
When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, He invited them to follow Him and become “fishers of men.” This call was an invitation to a transformative journey of learning, imitation, and participation in His mission.

Life Application

Evaluate areas in your life where you can more fully follow Jesus. Consider practical steps such as increased prayer, studying His teachings, and practicing His commands in your daily interactions.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Discipleship

Biblical Example

The guidance of the Holy Spirit in the early church (Acts 13:2-4). The Holy Spirit directed the early church in Antioch to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which God had called them, illustrating the Spirit’s role in guiding discipleship and mission.

John 16:13 -

"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth..." The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in guiding and empowering believers to live out their discipleship. The Spirit leads us into truth, convicts us of sin, and empowers us to live according to Jesus’ teachings.

Life Application

Regularly seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in decisions, study Scripture with the Spirit’s help, and rely on the Spirit’s power to live out your faith.

Jesus' Call to Discipleship

Luke 9:23

"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me."

Explanation

Jesus teaches that true discipleship involves self-denial, embracing suffering or challenges for the sake of the Gospel, and continually following Him. It is a daily commitment to put Christ first.

Life Application

Identify areas of self-centeredness or worldly desires that need to be surrendered. Make a daily commitment to put Jesus at the center of your decisions and actions.

Pentecostal Perspective

Pentecostal

Explanation

Pentecostals emphasize the role of the Holy Spirit not just in guidance but in actively transforming the believer’s life. The Holy Spirit enables a deeper walk with Christ, empowers for service, and brings spiritual gifts that equip disciples to fulfill their calling.

Emphasis

The transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the life of a disciple.

Life Application

Spend time in prayer asking for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit to empower your discipleship journey.
